The economy must be pretty bad if people in the city are starting to want to raise livestock in their back yard.
The Reader is reporting that OB is seeing an upswing of backyard chicken coops, but the city code is rigged in a way that would not let this be possible in your typical SD back yard:
“Article 2, Section 42.0709 of San Diego’s municipal code says that as long as you keep your coop at least 50 feet from any residential structure, the law in San Diego allows for the keeping of up to 25 fowl. But for most houses (especially in O.B.), a distance of 50 feet from your neighbor’s house — and yours — may not be possible.”
A whole movement has developed nationwide for urban agriculture in recent years. This is uncharacteristic for American culture in the last 50 years or so, but finds a striking parallel in the Victory Gardens of the world wars, backyard gardens meant to counteract food rationing and boost homefront morale.
OB doesn’t seem to be the only place either – down the street from my apartment in North Park, there is a well-secured, high-fenced jungle of a house that seems to be growing a ton of edible crops. I’ve never met these farmers, but maybe someday I’ll knock on the gate when I see those people working on their yard.
This is an excellent step toward a more sustainable and more ethical agriculture. As authors like Michael Pollan have written, being able to personally meet and kill the animals that you wind up eating will lead to a greater respect for one’s health, and the sanctity of the animal’s lives.
That being said, I don’t like getting woken up at the crack of dawn by roosters.
